A New Beginning...A New Idea.
It is the turn of the 26th century. 11 factions dominate the known Milky Way Galaxy, each with their own allies and enemies. A mercenary has returned after being thought long dead for 300 years...
---
"I know you."
John Rowe looks to the man who called him out. They are on one of the 16 side elevators on the Hard Place, a massive space station located in the Seraph System, not too far from Sol. Rowe turns away quickly and looks out at the Seraphian Sun.
"You're John Rowe. The mercenary thought dead for 300 years."
Hearing his name attracts his attention. Rowe turns again towards the man, and in a cold voice, he asks, "How do you know my name?"
"Because I've studied you," the mysterious man says. He walks up to Rowe, stepping ever so slightly out of the shadows, his dark eyes and brown hair showing his experience. "And I can tell you that you and I aren't so different. I'm a mercenary too."
"Your point?" Rowe asks as the side door opens into the main trading hub of the Hard Place.
The man follows Rowe out into the massive trade hub, which appears to extend for over three miles. "I know mercenaries like to do missions. And I have one for you."
Rowe walks through the trade hub, and the man follows.
"My name is Hiro Matoshi," he says. "I am an agent for a...special client, and I am here to tell you that the universe is in trouble...and you may be the only one who can stop it, what with your genetic amplifications and all."
Rowe stops dead in his tracks upon hearing about the genetic amplifications. They were supposed to be known to him, and him alone.
"How do you know--"
"As I said," Hiro interrupts, "You and I aren't so different. I have the same modifications as you. Enhanced brainpower, enhanced agility, enhanced strength, all at levels that currently cannot be reached by known galactic research and development. But I know the answers."
Rowe looks at him coldly. "Walk with me," he says, departing for his own comfort space. Hiro follows, continuing to explain.
"The war between the Earth Star Union and the Hand of Sokath was nothing but a distraction," he says. "There are much, MUCH bigger things out there than the doomed cease-fire between them."
The door to Rowe's apartment opens, and both step in.
"Something bigger? How big are we talking?" Rowe asks.
Hiro looks at him seriously. "Big enough to consume all 11 factions in the galaxy in a matter of months."
"Impossible," Rowe says. "It would take thousands of years to destroy a galaxy, let alone 11 massive space forces."
"Not with an army built upon your modifications. OUR modifications."
Rowe looks at the target hanging close to his wall. "So what's the job?" Rowe asks after several tense seconds, grabbing his pistol from the nearby cabinet.
Hiro looks at Rowe. "Save the universe...and your reward will be 1 million credits...and your origins."
Rowe loads an energy cell into his pistol and takes aim at the target on the wall, saying, "When do I start?" before firing.
