You've returned to your hometown, months after the death of King leoric, and found it nigh-deserted. The old innkeeper, Ogden, tells you how this came about. Apparently, soon after Leoric's passing, black riders attacked wayfarers, and much of the townspeople themselves, killing them and driving off many others. The Cathedral, meanwhile, had become a place of dark rituals, taken by all manner of unearthly beings, as it flashed various, otherworldly lights through it's windows. The Archbishop Lazarus had sent a party of warriors from the town in, but few returned... those that do spoke of a vile creature they call a butcher, inside the catacombs of the cathedral.
Ogden asks you to investigate the road leading into the town, to see if there are any survivors, and you finally come upon a single person: a wounded man, clearly about to lose his life. He tells you that Lazarus led them into a trap, pretending to be looking for Prince Albrecht, but in reality leading them into nothing more than demons. He, too, tells of the butcher, who slew his friends, and laid upon him a mortal blow. with his last breath, he asks you to avenge him and his fellows by slaying the beast...
