Re: SCARE level design community project *with real prizes*
hmmm...Yeah, I think I'll participate. anyone would for those drool-worthy prizes.
Re: SCARE level design community project *with real prizes*
HELLO FRIENDS!
This is just like my other contest except you get to design levels as opposed to just thinking up names! Wait... that's totally different but that's the idea!
Here's how it goes, I will be posting pictures of my levels and you just get them onto your computer and edit them in ms paint or whatever happens to be handy.
Step 1: look at the level designs
Step 2:Come up with realistic ideas and paint them onto the level map of your choosing
step 3:Explain what you're adding to the level, don't just draw a bunch of squiggles and expect me to understand
Step 4:Upload them back here in a post and I'll have a look at what your idea.
Now... I suppose you want a reason to be doing this then?
how about, I will love you if you do? No? well then how about free games! EVERYONE LOVES FREE GAMES!!!
As for the prizes,
NEW RULES:
one person wins every month they will get to select one game from the list. This contest will continue until I run out of money to buy steam games with (probably never)
Winners:
2011
August: Nut_Column, for submitting the only level designs in that month (good ones at that too)
Choose your game if you are on the list in a PM to me
PRIZES:
1)Orange Box
2)Borderlands game of the year edition
3)Medal Of Honour (the new one)
4)Dragon Age: Origins
5)Far Cry 2: Fortunes edition
but how will I know who to give them to? well I've done up a scoring system for what you've done to the levels:
1)General idea /5
Basically if your idea sucks then you'll not get a very good score, but if your idea is great you'll get closer to a 10
2)Description /5
If you describe it like this "put peeple heer and make monstar jump out" you would probably actually get a 3/5 because I can understand and it's a sound theory. HOWEVER if your description sounds like this
"Put some people over by the wall who are on waypoint paths. Then at this doorway here make something big and scary jump at the player, some pseudo-code you could use might look like this:
if player in zone: then spawn monster
and then you can have some more monsters wandering around with a wander script over *here*."
That description would get a 5/5 and put you 2 points ahead of the person without proper spelling and grammar.
3)Usability /5
If the level goes with the flow of the game it is 'usable', if the level you just created looks like happyland then you probably don't understand what "SCARE" is supposed to mean. Something with low light and lots of stuff to build suspense would get a 5/5, happyland gets a 1... out of 10.
Now that I've described scoring, how about I show you those levels?
One at a time now...

Re: SCARE level design community project *with real prizes*
I haven't been able to get graph paper myself yet.
I've been too busy wiping out deadly bacteria and viruses which have been assaulting my body using my mighty army of white blood cells.
Or, in layman terms, "I been sick"

I've no doubt, I spent about 10 minutes on that one, seeing as I just put captions over Angus's Previous Level

Just so you know I'm working on your 2nd level design right now, I didn't make the first and I might make the third once I'm done this one and it's uploaded for testing
Re: SCARE level design community project *with real prizes*
What? You mean you're not making the level that you can barely Read? What's the matter with you man?

Re: SCARE level design community project *with real prizes*
i WONDER who's going to win, could it perhaps be the person designing several levels? Maybe he'll get 2 first picks and dragon age because he's the only one posting anything.
(I'm talking about Nut_Column by the way)

No, i just was temporarily limited with the same capabilities as one.
Re: SCARE level design community project *with real prizes*
Well, you're well enough to be online, I think you're well enough to design a level.
